Ma ormai i rapporti con il club viola erano compromessi definitivamente. Ritornò in Uruguay al Nacional di Montevideo col quale fece in tempo a vincere il titolo nazionale del 1933, nonostante dovesse rispettare la sanzione disciplinare. Qui venne raggiunto dalla squalifica internazionale che gli stroncò la carriera a 28 anni. Amore e odio. Dopo il calcio visse una vita da divo. Ma povero e malato, scomparve precocemente. È davvero un piacere parlare di calcio con colui che, nel corso di una carriera che lo vide conquistare per tre volte il titolo di miglior portiere del mondo, fu soprannominato l’“Uomo Ragno” per le sue eccezionali qualità acrobatiche.

A differenza di altri campioni del passato, in Zenga si percepisce come il calcio, una volta appese le scarpe al chiodo, sia davvero rimasto parte integrante della vita e come ogni singolo ricordo di una carriera vissuta da protagonista sia ormai indelebile nella sua memoria.

Da Wembley e le sue reti accoglienti ad Underhill, dalle maglie del West Ham al Subbuteo, da Willie Young ad un passato che nel ricordo viene visto sempre migliore e più romantico di quanto non fosse, ma che ha il merito di essere, perlomeno, lontano dall'apparente caos e dalla mercificazione di oggi.
